The Italian club are chasing the consolation prize of a place in the UEFA Cup after failing to make it past the group stages of the Champions League. All is not lost for the Romanian club either as a draw will see them beat Fiorentina for that same UEFA Cup slot.

Steaua started this season's campaign on a disastrous note losing 0-1 to Bayern Munich. This was followed by a better performance by the team where they held Fiorentina to a 0-0 draw away from home. However disaster struck on Matchday 3 when Steaua went down 3-5 to Lyon and then lost the return leg by a 0-2 margin.

On Matchday 5, a brace from Miroslav Klose and another goal from Luca Toni consigned the Romanian club to a 0-3 loss to Bayern.

Fiorentina on the other hand started on a steady note with a 2-2 UEFA Champions League draw against Lyon. However they were unable to force the pace in Group F holding Steaua to a 0-0 draw in a subsequent game, before succumbing to a 0-3 loss to Bayern Munich. In the return leg, the Viola managed a 1-1 draw, but by then it was too late. Matchday 5 saw the Italian club sink to a 1-2 loss against Lyon thanks to goals from Karim Benzema and Jean II Makoun, which nullified Albert Gilardino's effort.

Massimo Gobbi is all set to miss this game as he is yet to recover from a fractured cheekbone.
