After drawing 2-2 at Goodison Park two weeks ago, Belgian champions Standard de Liege welcome Everton to the Stade Maurice Dufrasne for the second leg of their first round UEFA Cup tie on Thursday. Standard, who pushed Liverpool to the limit in the Champions League, are sitting on top of the Belgian Jupiler League after beating RSC Anderlecht 2-1 at home. Alexsander Yakovenko and Milan Jovanovic were the scorers. In their first leg, Standard took the lead twice, only to see Everton come back on both occasions. Standard are unbeaten domestically, and the draw at Goodison against one of last season’s best performing teams in Europe would have greatly boosted their confidence. After hosting Everton, Standard will face Brugge- another crucial domestic game. Standard have not lost a single game at home this season.

Everton were poor defensively against Standard, and needed debutant Segundo Castillo to rescue them and salvage a point. The results after the first leg draw have not been very encouraging- a 2-2 draw against Hull City followed by a Carling Cup third round exit at the hands of Blackburn Rovers. Most recently, they lost the Merseyside derby to Liverpool, a match which also saw Tim Cahill receive the marching orders from referee Mike Riley. Tony Hibbert started against Liverpool, a positive sign for the injury hit Toffees. Midfielder Marouane Fellaini is cup tied, and Victor Anichebe, Andy Van der Myde and Steven Pienaar are all expected to miss this game, as they are not expected to recover from their injuries.
