Arsenal will be hoping to recover from their shock defeat to Manchester City in time to get their European campaign off to a winning start when they visit Belgian club Standard Liege in their opening Champions League group match on Wednesday. The Gunners suffered a disappointing 4-2 defeat to City over the weekend and extended their winning streak to two games. While they are expected to progress to the knockout stage with games to spare, manager Arsene Wenger will not be taking any chances and is expected to field a strong side.

Arsenal had a good European campaign last season making it as far as the semi finals of the competition where they were suffered a 4-1 aggregate defeat to fellow English rivals Manchester United who won both the legs.

Arsenal secured a comfortable 5-1 aggregate win over Celtic in the play-offs round. An own goal by Gary Caldwell and another by William Gallas secured them a comfortable 2-0 win in the first leg before goals from Eduardo, Emmanuel Eboue and Andrei Arshavin saw them book a place in the group stages.

Standard Liege will be taking part in the group stages of the Champions League for the first time in its history. The Belgian club last met Arsenal back in 1993-94 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup when the Gunners secured a thumping 7-0 win in Belgium and progress to the next round with a comfortable 10-0 aggregate victory.
