Stabaek won the Tippeligaen last season with 54 points from 26 games, six ahead of second placed Frederikstad. De Blaa thus qualified for the second qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League, where they beat KF Tirana 5-1 on aggregate. However FC Copenhagen were too strong for them in the third qualifying round, and they lost the tie 3-1 on aggregate.

Stabaek drew with Tromsa in their weekend Tippeligaen game. The result did nothing to restore Stabaek's fading hopes of defending their title. Leaders Rosenborg are sixteen points away and with only ten games left to go, Stabaek don't realistically stand a chance of catching up with them. Daniel Nannskog is Stabaek's top scorer in Norway this season with eight goals.

The Spanish La Liga will start at the end of August, and so Stabaek have an edge over their opponents with respect to match fitness. Valencia have had mixed results in their recent pre-season friendlies. They have won two, lost two and drawn one of their last five friendlies. They lost to Manchester United 2-0, but managed to beat Arsenal by the same scoreline.

The six time La Liga champions' last match was an exhibition game against local rivals Sevilla, which they lost 2-0. Adriano and Arouna Kone scored for the Andalusian club. Valencia boss Unai Emery can still count on the likes of David Villa and David Silva, who have stayed with Los Che this summer despite being strongly linked with a move out of the Mestalla.
