Sporting qualified for this stage as runners-up in the Portuguese Liga last season. The Lisbon club was drawn to face FC Twente in the third qualifying round. Meanwhile Fiorentina made it to the Champions League qualification stage after securing the fourth spot in Serie A last season. Manager Cesare Prandelli will hope his side can once again make it to the group stage and beyond this season.

Much will depend on Romanian hit man Adrian Mutu and midfielder Cristiano Zanetti if the Viola are to make progress in Europe this season.
