The German giants have won four and drew six of their last 10 matches in Portugal and will be looking to shrug off their recent poor form and secure a morale boosting victory in the midweek as they look to take an early advantage in their knockout stage tie.

Bayern have lost just once in a European competition against Portuguese opponents during 1986-87 European Champion Clubs' Cup final against Porto. Having missed out last season’s tournament, Bayern will be keen to go on a strong run this time around and try to repeat their 2001 performance when they won the competition on penalties.

 

 

Sporting CP will be looking to qualify to the quarter finals of the competition for only the second time in their history. The Portuguese side last qualified to the quarter finals during the 1982-83 and has failed to make it to the knockout stages in the last four attempts.

Sporting managed to secure both home and away wins against Basel and Shakhtar Donetsk but suffered defeats against Barcelona to finish second in the group table. Paulo Bento's side has a poor record against German opponents, failing to win even once in the 14 matches in the competition.

 

 

Both the teams last met back in the 2006-07 season when Bayern secured a 1-0 win at the Estadio Jose Alvalade before being held to a 0-0 draw in Germany.
