In the first leg played at Reebok Stadium, Sporting seized the advantage despite trailing by a Gavin McCann goal scored in the 25th minute. Bolton boss Gary Megson would have thought that they had the early advantage, but he was devastated to see Simon Vukcevic score the equalizer in the 69th-minute.

McCann recovered nicely from his back injury, but Bolton were angry with the Israeli officials who officiated that game. Manager Megson said that the referee was wrong in not sending off Lisbon keeper Rui Patricio, who was thought to have handled the ball when he rushed out to stop Heidar Helguson.

Megson felt his side deserved a win. He will still be without Kevin Nolan and first choice keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen both of whom are struggling with back injuries. El Hadji Diouf could however be available for the second leg after he missed the first leg dur to suspension.

However Megson has also admitted that the Premiership was more important than progressing through to the quarterfinals of live UEFA cup. Bolton are unbeaten in their last six UEFA Cup live games, but are on the brink in the Premier League.

Sporting Lisbon manager Paulo Bento could be without Liedson with a left thigh strain. Derlei is out with a knee injury and Yannick Djalo has a thigh issue.
