Real Madrid will be looking to shrug off their Champions League defeat and resume their pursuit of Barcelona at the top of the La Liga table when they take on Sporting Gijon on Saturday. The Spanish giants were tipped to secure a big win over Milan on Wednesday but slumped to a shock 3-2 defeat and slip to second place in their group table. This was Manuel Pellegrini's second defeat since taking over the reins at Santiago Bernabeu and the former Villarreal manager is already under some pressure following a couple of lackluster displays from the side.

Pellegrini will be hopeful that his players will manage to improve on their negatives from the match when they visit Gijon and with Barcelona expected to face a stern test against Zaragoza on Sunday, the Real Madrid coach will be keen to put more pressure on their title rivals by moving to the top of the league table.

Madrid will be missing a number of key players with Cristiano Ronaldo still out of action along with Guti, Fernando Gago, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Christoph Metzelder. However Lassana Diarra will return back to the starting lineup after recovering from his injury.

Madrid should not have any problems in disposing of Gijon but Pellegrini will be wary of complacency with Manuel Preciado's side winning their last two matches including a 2-1 away victory over Athletic Bilbao last weekend.

Miguel de las Cuevas scored two goals in space of 12 minutes midway through the second half and though Bilbao managed to reduce the deficit through Gaizka Toquero nine minutes before the full time whistle, they were unable to secure the equalizer.
