Sporting CP face a must win match against AS Roma when the two teams meet each other in their next Champions League clash on Wednesday. The Portuguese club desperately needs a victory against Roma if they want to have any chance of qualifying into the knockout stages of the competition.

Losses to Manchester United and Roma means that Sporting CP have collected just 3 points from their three matches and sit in third position in the group table, three points behind the Italian team. A loss against AS Roma on Wednesday would leave Sporting six points behind Roman and could very well put an end to hopes of qualifying to the knockout stages.

However Sporting CP has a poor record against Italian clubs, with the 1-0 victory over Inter Milan being the only win in over 13 matches. Even at home, Sporting have struggled against their Italian counterparts, winning just three of their last 10 matches.

Meanwhile Roma will be looking to repeat their performance from the last match which saw them beat Sporting 2-1 at the Stadio Olimpico on 23 October. Juan and Mirko Vucinic scored for the Italians while Liedson was on the target for Sporting. The victory has left them second in the group table, three points ahead of their opponents.

A win on Wednesday would mean that Roma would need just one more point from their remaining two matches to qualify for the knockout stages. Roma have had a balanced record against Portuguese opponents in Portugal, winning two and losing two while one match ended in a draw. The last Portuguese opponents were Boavista back in 2000 when Roma had emerged victorious with a narrow margin of 1-0.
