Spain seemed perfectly on course for a dream final meeting with Brazil, but La Furia Roja's thirty five game unbeaten streak was halted by the United States, who stunned them 2-0 in Bloemfontein. Jozy Altidore, who plies his trade in Spain, opened the scoring for Bob Bradley's side, before Fulham player Clint Dempsey finished off the game with a goal in 74th minute.
Spain had an off day. The United States took the game to them instead of countering Spain's passing style with negative tactics. Their midfield was stifled, and Xavi and Xabi Alonso were not allowed to produce those defence splitting passes.
South Africa nearly pulled off an upset against Brazil, but Dani Alves' late strike rescued the defending champions in Johannesburg. Alves, a second half substitute, fired home the winner from a free kick after South African captain Aaron Mokoena had brought Brazilian midfielder Ramires down on the edge of the area.
Bafana Bafana gave a good account of themselves against the Selecao, and if they can do something similar against Spain, they will give the reigning European champions a run for their money. Macbeth Sibaya is available for selection after serving a one game ban. Coach Joel Santana would also have noticed how Joan Capdevila struggled to cope with the physical strength of Jozy Altidore.
Spain will be keen to prove that their loss to the USA was nothing but one off day. South Africa will be brimming with confidence after a great display against Brazil. Watch Spain v South Africa live to see who finishes third in the 2009 Confederations Cup.
