David Beckham has been given an opportunity to equal Bobby Moore's record of 108 England appearances after manager Fabio Capello named him in the squad to take on Spain in an international friendly to be played on Wednesday at the Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan in Spain. Capello decided to include Beckham in his squad after being impressed by his performances in the Italian Serie A where Beckham is on loan with AC Milan. Another factor that could have influenced Capello is the continued absence of Theo Walcott with a shoulder injury.

Continuing his policy of trying out the best available talent in the country, Capello has included Carlton Cole and James Milner in his squad for the first time. It is expected that Cole will make his debut in this game.

 

 

Rio Ferdinand also makes a return to the squad. The Manchester United defender has not played with John Terry ever since England clinched a win over Croatia in their World Cup qualifying campaign last year. Wayne Rooney is out as is Steven Gerrard, who has a torn hamstring. With Jermaine Defoe scheduled to undergo surgery, Capello will hope Cole can grab this chance to show his wares on the international stage.

Meanwhile Spain coach Vicente del Bosque has also decided to try out new players and has called up Gerard Pique and Sergio Busquets for the first time. Andres Iniesta is also back after missing Spain's 3-0 friendly win over Chile in November due to a thigh injury.

 

 

Fernando Torres is also a part of the squad despite the fact that there are injury concerns with the Liverpool striker. Fernando Llorente has also been included in the quad and may be preferred to Torres in this game. Other Liverpool players in the squad include Pepe Reina, Alvaro Arbeloa, Xabi Alonso and Albert Riera.
