The Saints have had an extended run in the competition thanks to some diligent football played by them. In the fourth round they overcame Ipswich Town 2-1 with Wayne Thomas and Michail Antonio scoring in either half. Pablo Gonzalez Counago grabbed a late consolation for Ipswich.

Southampton boss Alan Pardew will hope his side can continue with their fine showing. He will miss skipper Dean Hammond for this game as he is yet to recover from a calf injury. Graeme Murty and David Connolly are also doubtful starters with ankle ligament damage and groin injury respectively.

Meanwhile Portsmouth are battling a winding up petition, but manager Avram Grant has insisted his team will fight for survival on the pitch. Pompey progressed to the fifth round after a shock win over Sunderland by a 2-1 margin. A brace from John Utaka nullified Darren Bent's early strike for the Black Cats and gave Pompey a well deserved win.

For this game, Kevin-Prince Boateng and Anthony Vanden Borre are doubtful starters, but Grant has an otherwise fit squad at his disposal.
