Manchester United travel to Southampton in the third round of the FA Cup with the Premier League champions keen to avoid an upset against a side that is struggling to stay afloat in the Championship. United go into the match on the back of some New Year cheer with Cristiano Ronaldo stating that he is happy at the club and is no longer angling for a move away to Real Madrid. The Spanish club's director Pedro Trapote had stated in an interview that a deal was in place for Ronaldo to move to Madrid at the end of the season but the Portuguese winger has rubbished the reports saying that there is no truth in the report.

 

 

The Red Devils had drawn Aston Villa in the third round last season and while they secured a comfortable victory over Martin O'Neill's side and beat Arsenal 4-0 in the fifth round, they lost out to eventual winners Portsmouth in the sixth round.

Southampton should prove to be easy opponents for United with the Saints not tasting a win in their last eight matches. Southampton are struggling in the Championship with the club placed 23rd in the league table.

 

 

The Saints made it to the fifth round in the competition last season, securing comfortable victories against Leicester City and Bury before losing 1-0 away to Bristol City. With survival in the Championship being the primary focus, manager Jan Poortvliet is expected to rest some of his key players ahead of crucial matches against Barnsley and Doncaster Rovers.
