Premier League new boys Birmingham City face tricky opposition in the form of Southampton when they travel to the South Coast for their second round Carling Cup game on Tuesday evening. Southampton came close to winning their first league game of the new season against Brentford on Saturday, but were denied all three by Cleveland Taylor's late goal. Dan Harding's 73^rd minute strike seemed to have sealed victory for the Saints at St. Mary's, but Taylor played spoilsport by heading home Ryan Dickson's cross late in the game.

Southampton beat Northampton Town 2-0 in the first round of the 2009-10 League Cup. Rickie Lambert scored on debut for the Saints to give them a 1-0 lead going into the lemon break, and Adam Lallana made sure of victory with his 68^th minute goal.

Birmingham have started their new season quite well. Alex McLeish's men ran Manchester United close on the opening day of the season, and beat Portsmouth 1-0 last Wednesday thanks to a late penalty from James McFadden.

Blues drew their weekend game against Stoke City. The match was a hard fought one, but neither side ever looked as if they were going to be able to break the deadlock. The best chance of the game went to Garry O'Connor, but Stoke keeper Thomas Sorensen produced a brilliant save to deny the Scottish striker.

Last season, these two sides also met in the second round of the live Carling Cup. Southampton beat Birmingham 2-0 on that occasion with goals from Lee Holmes and Adam Lallana, but a lot has changed since then.
