South Africa were not expected to qualify from Group A, but some impressive pre-World Cup performances have given fans of the host nation renewed hope. The Bafana Bafana have won their last three international friendlies against Colombia, Guatemala and Denmark respectively.

The last result was the biggest of them all, given that the Danes are also competing at the World Cup and topped their group in European qualifying. Katlego Mphela scored the winning goal against the Scandinavians.

Mexico have had mixed results recently. El Tri suffered defeats against both England and the Netherlands, but recovered to thrash Gambia 5-1 and upset world champions Italy 2-1. Guadalajara forward Alberto Medina has been in excellent touch for El Tri, netting four times in their last seven fixtures. Another player South Africa will have to watch out for is young Javier Hernandez, who netted a brace against Gambia.
