Bafana started off nervously in the tournament opener against Mexico, but took the lead close to the hour mark by hitting Mexico on the counter. Teko Modise’s brilliant pass found Siphiwe Tshabalala in acres of space and the Kaizer Chiefs winger did not disappoint, smashing an unstoppable shot into the top corner of Oscar Perez’s net.

South Africa had numerous opportunities to close out the game, with Modise himself guilty of missing a chance. They were made to pay when an unmarked Rafael Marquez grabbed the equaliser for Mexico eleven minutes from time. Katlego Mphela could have given his side a famous victory, but was let down by some poor finishing in front of goal.

Uruguay played out a goalless draw against 1998 champions France in their tournament opener. Young Nicolas Lodeiro, a second half substitute for Ignacio Gonzalez, was sent off nine minutes from time and is suspended for the game against South Africa.
