South Africa, cheered on by a partisan 48,000 crowd, were unable to find a way past Iraq, and both teams had to settle for a point each. The hosts did have their chances, but lady luck was not on their side as Iraq managed to keep the game goalless.

With six minutes left on the clock, Iraq keeper Mohammed Kassid could not do nothing but watch as Kagisho Dikgacoi headed the ball towards goal. Incredibly though, it hit the leg of Bafana striker Bernard Parker and bounced back out of the the goalmouth. Iraq heaved a huge sigh of relief as South Africa failed to capitalise on their best chance of the evening. Influential midfielder Steven Pienaar is likely to start the next game, and that will give South Africa some much needed creativity in midfield.

New Zealand were handed a footballing lesson by European champions Spain in Rustenburg in their Group A tie on Sunday. The Spanish raced to a 4-0 lead within the first twenty four minutes as New Zealand's defence was torn to shreds.

New Zealand sorely missed captain Ryan Nelsen at the back. Spain did not allow New Zealand to cross the half way line, and completely dominated the game. Coach Rickie Herbert rued his side's shambolic defending, but promised to come up with a better show against South Africa.
