Hosts South Africa are only playing their second Confederations Cup. They first competed in the tournament twelve years ago in 1997, when they finished last in their group. The Bafana Bafana, then coached by Clive Barker, drew with the Czech Republic and lost to UAE and Uruguay.

South Africa beat Poland 1-0 in their last warm up game. Maccabi Haifa striker Terror Fanteni scored the only goal of the game early in the first half. However they shouldn't read too much into the result- a good run of form in the lead up to a competition has usually been followed by some very ordinary performances by the Bafana Bafana in the tournament itself. Coach Joel Santana will have to do without the services of Sundowns midfielder Surprise Moriri,who has been ruled out of the tournament with a knee injury.

Iraq qualified for this tournament by virtue of their 2007 AFC Asian Cup triumph. Two Iraqi players ply their trade in Europe- Nashat Akram who plays for FC Twente, and Hawar Muhammad, who plays for Anorthosis Famagusta. The duo, along with captain Younis Mahmoud and striker Emad Mohammed will be the key players for Iraq in this tournament.

Iraq drew 1-1 with Poland in Cape Town in their last major friendly. Mahdi Kareem gave Bora Milutnovic's side the lead, but it was cancelled out by Roger's strike. Iraq have some tall players in their side, and this could pose problems for South Africa, whose defending at corners and set pieces has often looked suspect in recent times.
