The World Cup hosts had thrashed Thailand 4-0 early this month with Katlego Mphela scoring a brace while Siphiwe Tshabalala and Bernard Parker were also on target. Coach Carlos Alberto Parreira will be pleased with the result but will be aware that the real test starts on Thursday if they are to maintain the tradition of host nations making it to at least the knockout stage of the competition.

Parreira will be keen to give Benni McCarthy a chance to prove that he still has a future with the national team in spite of the striker struggling with form and injuries last season. McCarthy has not scored for South Africa since October 2008 and the West Ham striker has a great chance to feature in what could be his final World Cup tournament.

Meanwhile Colombia will be looking to put behind a disappointing World Cup qualification campaign by securing a comfortable victory against the hosts on Thursday. Hernan Dario Gomez’s side finished seventh in the qualification campaign.
