Bafana Bafana have named a strong squad for the Cup and are early favorites along with defending champions Egypt, Cameroon and Nigeria. Coach Carlos Alberto Parreira has got the right talent at his disposal, but will have been worried about his strike force.

South Africa won their friendly games against Mozambique and Botswana, 1-0 and 2-1 respectively, but were missing a quality striker to convert the numerous chances they had. With Parreira choosing to omit prolific scorer Benni McCarthy, there seems to be a dearth of players who can score.

Nevertheless the team appears to be a balanced one with Everton midfielder Steven Pienaar providing the much-needed stability in the middle of the field. Captain Aaron Mokoena is going to have to motivate his players especially since they will be without goalkeeper Rowen Fernandez, who has a broken finger.

South Africa will also hope to erase memories of their first round exit from the 2006 live African Nations Cup.

Meanwhile Angola have decided to stick to experience in naming their 23-man squad for the Nations Cup. The Palancas Negras have played in four African Cup of Nations finals, but have never made it past the first round in any of them.

Gilberto and Maurito are included in the squad after missing the World Cup due to injury. Yamba Asha also returns after serving a nine-month ban for drug abuse.
