The Russians looked on course for a comfortable victory after a brace from Diniyar Bilyaletdinov gave them a 2-0 win early in the second half. Just when it looked as if the second leg would be a mere formality, Nejc Pecnik came off the bench to score a vital away goal with just two minutes remaining on the clock to give Slovenia a great chance to cause an upset in the second leg.

Coach Guus Hiddink expressed his disappointment that his side conceded a goal so late in the game. While Hiddink was happy that his side managed to win the game, Slovenia's away goal meant that Russia will have to do it all over again in the second leg if they are to progress to the World Cup finals.

Slovenia coach Matjaz Kek on the other hand was delighted with the result and expressed confidence that his side will be able to get the required result that will see them qualify for the World Cup finals for only the second time in their history. Kek admitted that his side was the second best for most of the game but was relieved when Pecnik popped up to score the goal for his side.

Matej Mavric continues to remain a doubt for Slovenia with the defender yet to recover from his back injury. Hiddink on the other hand has no injury concerns and will be gearing up for what is the most important game during his time as the Russia coach.
