Shane Smeltz’s goal midway through the first half was enough as New Zealand hung on to claim a shock victory over Serbia in a game which they were tipped to lose heavily. The All Blacks are tipped as the weakest team in the World Cup and are expected to suffer heavy defeats in all of their three matches.

However coach Ricki Herbert will be optimistic that the victory over Serbia will provide the perfect platform for his side to prove its doubters wrong and put up a good fight against their other group opponents including Italy and Paraguay.

Meanwhile Slovenia coach Matjaz Kek will have just one chance to get his tactics right before the start of the World Cup campaign with Slovenia playing just one friendly game before their first group match against Algeria kicks off on June 13.

Slovenia are grouped with England, United States and Algeria and Kek will be aware that anything less than a victory in their opening match could spell an end to their hopes of making a shock appearance in the knockout stage.
