The only previous meeting between the two sides, as mentioned before, came twelve years ago in January 1998. Italy won that friendly 3-0 in Catania, a game that saw Francesco Moriero and Luigi di Biagio make their debuts for the Azzurri. Italy’s goals that day came from the boots of Fabrizio Ravanelli, Alessandro Del Piero and Roberto Di Matteo.

Italy’s only survivor from that team today is goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, who was second choice to Angelo Peruzzi that evening. Slovakia’s only survivor is veteran holding midfielder Miroslav Karhan, who currently plies his trade for Mainz in Germany. Both Slovakia and Italy qualified for the World Cup by winning their respective groups. Both teams picked up seven wins in qualifying, but while Italy remained undefeated in the other three games, Slovakia were beaten twice by Slovenia.
