Czech side SK Slavia Praha will play their first group game in the UEFA Cup this season on Thursday night when they entertain Aston Villa at the Evzena Rosickeho Stadium. Slavia Prague were at the receiving end of a 7-0 mauling by Arsenal in October last year in the Champions League, and were dumped out of the UEFA Cup in the round of 32 by Tottenham Hotspur. This year, they lost in the knockout round of the Champions League to Fiorentina, and beat Romanian side Vaslui on the away goals rule to progress to the group stage of the UEFA Cup. After the away draw at Vaslui, Slavia Prague have been in great form. They won four of their next five games, and even thrashed bitter rivals Sparta 4-1 in the league. In their last five games in all competitions, Slavia have scored an astonishing fifteen goals. In their weekend clash against FC Brno, Slavia emerged 2-1 winners, with both the goals coming from teenager Tomas Necid.

 

 

The trip to Prague is the second game in a busy week for Villa. They played Newcastle on Monday, and will play Middlesbrough on Sunday. But O’Neill is certainly not complaining, for the last time they played a domestic game on Monday night, they won their UEFA Cup game against Litex Lovech. Villa have already opened their account in Group F, beating Ajax Amsterdam 2-1 at Villa Park. Martin Laursen and Gareth Barry scored on either side of a Thomas Vermaelen goal to give Villa all three points. The Ajax victory was followed by 4-0 and 3-2 wins over Wigan Athletic and Blackburn Rovers respectively. A win in Prague will give Villa’s chances of qualifying for the next round a huge boost.
