Mircea Lucescu’s Shakhtar are playing in their first ever European final. They beat fellow Ukrainians Dynamo 3-2 on aggregate in the semifinals. The first leg was drawn 1-1 in Kiev, and Brazilians Jadson and Ilsinho were on target in Donetsk as Shakhtar won 2-1 at home.

Shakhtar beat Zorya Luhansk 3-0 in their weekend domestic fixture. Evhen Seleznyov netted a brace, with Brazilian Willian scoring the third. Tomas Hubschmann is suspended for the final, while Olexsandr Kucher returns from suspension.

 

 

Werder Bremen are still on course to do a double despite a poor performance in the Bundesliga this season. Thomas Schaaf’s men beat great north German rivals Hamburger SV in the semifinal on away goals. HSV won 1-0 in the first leg at the Weserstadion, but Bremen beat HSV 3-2 in the second leg at the Nordbank Arena on progress on the away goals rule.

Star playmaker Diego is suspended for the final, and so is Portuguese striker Hugo Almeida. In Diego’s absence, a lot will depend on Claudio Pizarro, who is the club’s second highest scorer in the tournament after the Brazilian. Werder were beaten 3-1 by struggling Karlsruhe in the Bundesliga on Saturday.

This is the first time that the UEFA Cup final is being held in Turkey. Shakhtar will be hoping to taste success in Europe for the first time, while Bremen are looking for their second continental trophy after their 1991-92 Cup Winner’s Cup triumph.
