Shakhtar knocked out CSKA Moscow 2-1 on aggregate in the round of 16. Despite losing the first leg in Moscow, Shakhtar produced a magnificent turn around by winning 2-0 in Donetsk. The goals came from Fernandinho and Luiz Adriano. Apart from these two, Shakhtar have many other good players- Razvan Rat, Mariusz Lewandowski, Jadson and Olexandr Gladkiy.

Should Shakhtar beat Marseille, they could set up a potential semifinal clash against compatriots Dynamo Kiev. Dmytro Chrygrynskyy returns after missing the second leg against CSKA through suspension. Shakhtar lost their league game on Sunday 1-0 to FC Metalurh Zaporizhya. They are fifteen points behind Dynamo Kiev in the Ukrainian league.

 

 

Marseille beat Steve McClaren’s Twente Enschede 7-6 on penalties in the round of 32, and followed it up by eliminating Ajax Amsterdam in the round of 16. Tyrone Mears’ extra time goal at the Amsterdam Arena allowed Marseille to win 4-3 on aggregate. Marseille are hot on Lyon’s heels in the French Ligue 1. They beat St.Etienne 3-0 on Sunday with star striker Mamadou Niang netting a brace. Former Shakhtar forward Brandao and Sylvain Wiltord are cup tied. As many as seven Marseille players including the likes of Hatem Ben Arfa, Benoit Cheyrou, Niang, Mathieu Valbuena and Taiye Taiwo will miss the next leg if booked.
