Just three points in their first four matches has seen Shakhtar go six points behind second placed Sporting Lisbon and the Ukrainian club will find themselves out of contention of a place in the knockout stage if Sporting manage to collect at least a point against Barcelona on Wednesday.

Mircea Lucescu's side however will qualify for the UEFA Cup in the next round should they collect all three points against Basel, a team against whom they have registered their only victory so far. Goals from Fernandinho and Jadson in the first half propelled Shakhtar to a comfortable 2-0 lead in the game before David Abraham scored a consolation goal deep in injury time for Basel.

 

 

It has been the only victory for Shakhtar who have since then lost both the legs to Barcelona and Sporting Lisbon. With Basel collecting just one points from their four games so far, Shakhtar could book a place in the UEFA Cup should they manage to beat the Swiss club on Wednesday.

Basel on the other hand will be looking to build on their credible draw away to Barcelona in their last match. The Catalan giants had taken the lead two minutes past the hour mark through Lionel Messi before Eren Derdiyok scored a late equalizer in the 82nd minute to help his side to its first point in their Champions League campaign this season.
