Fernandinho’s second half goal allowed Shakhtar to walk out of the first leg in Kiev with a crucial away goal. Shakhtar Donetsk were second best for most of the first half, but things changed after the introduction of Willian. The Brazilian provided the cross from which Fernandinho scored the equaliser for Shakhtar.

In their weekend domestic game, Shakhtar beat Kryvbas Kryvyi Rih 1-0. Jadson scored the only goal of the game. Defender Oleksandr Kucher is suspended for the second leg after picking up a yellow card in the first leg in Kiev.

Dinamo, who lead the Premier League in Ukraine, will be kicking themselves for not converting the opportunities that came their way in the first leg. They took the lead through an own goal from Dmytro Chigrinsky in the first half. However they did not score a second, and were punished when Fernandinho equalised midway through the second half for Shakhtar. Coach Yuri Semin was not a happy man after watching his side give away possession too easily in the second half.

Dinamo beat FC Zorya Luhansk in their weekend game. Romanian midfielder Tiberiu Ghioane scored the winner as Dinamo inched closer to reclaiming the Ukrainian league. Yuri Semin’s men need only one point from their next four games to win the league. In the round of 32, Dinamo had drawn the first leg 1-1 in Kiev, but went on to score two away goals at the Mestalla, thus knocking out fancied Valencia.
