Shakhtar registered a narrow 2-1 win over Basel in their opening group match in Switzerland. Fernandinho and Jadson put Shakhtar in a 2-0 lead by half time with both the players scoring from free kicks. Basel scored a consolation goal deep in injury time through David Abraham but were unable to pose much threat to the visitors' defense.

The Ukrainian club has failed to advance to the knockout stages in their last four Champions League campaign. Shakhtar came close to breaking the run last season when they secured wins in their first two matches but defeats in their remaining four matches meant that the club finished yet another season at the foot of their group table.

 

 

Barcelona go into this match on the back of three successive wins in the league. The Catalan giants secured a 3-1 win over Sporting Lisbon in their first game of the campaign with Rafael Marquez, Samuel Eto'o and Xavi on target while Tonel was on target for the Portuguese club.

Barcelona coach Josep Guardiola will be looking to improve his side's record against Shakhtar away in Ukraine with their two visits to the RSK Olympyiskyi yielding a draw and a loss. The two teams last met in 2004-05 season when Shakhtar beat Barcelona 2-0 at home to seal their place in the UEFA Cup via a third placed finish in the league.
