Scotland currently lie third in the group with seven points from six games played so far. They are equal on points with Macedonia, but lag behind them due to a bad goal difference. With the Netherlands having already qualified for the 2010 world cup, the race is on for the best second place finish in this group.

Scotland manager George Burley is under serious pressure and failure to win a spot in the world cup could cost him his job. He is having to do with a number of new players as many regulars are struggling with injuries.

Garry O'Connor has been called up for the World Cup qualifiers against Macedonia and the Netherlands as a replacement for Kevin Kyle, who misses out with a cartilage tear. Steven Caldwell will miss both games with a groin injury, while Gary Caldwell is out with suspension. Stephen McManus and Christophe Berra have been called up despite carrying injuries, while David Clarkson is a doubtful starter with injury. David Weir has been recalled in a bid to provide some experience in central defense.

Meanwhile Macedonia will also be entertaining hopes of finishing second in their group and making it to South Africa. However rumors indicate all is not well in Mirsad Jozun's squad as star players like Goran Pandev, Goran Popov, Goce Sedloski and striker Ilco Naumoski are at loggerheads.
