Schalke drew 1-1 against Bundesliga leaders Hamburg on Sunday. The result was Schalke’s third draw in their last three games, having split points against APOEL Nicosia and VFL Wolfsburg prior to this encounter. Left back Christian Pander missed the game due to injury, and Rutten gave Halil Altintop the nod ahead of Ivan Rakitic. We will probably see Mladen Krstajic partner skipper Bordon in defence, with Rafinha and Westermann occupying the right and left back spot respectively. Rutten has plenty of attacking options- Jefferson Farfan, Gerald Asamoah, Vicente Sanchez and Kevin Kuranyi. Schalke beat APOEL 5-2 over two legs to enter the group stages.

PSG were languishing in mid table, having picked up just one point from their last three games prior to their weekend clash against Lorient, but a hard fought 3-2 win gives them some much needed confidence ahead of the clash against Schalke. PSG came back from a goal down twice, and then won the game thanks to Loris Arnaud’s late goal. It was the first league game of the season where PSG scored more than once and conceded more than one goal too. PSG beat Kayserispor 2-1 in Turkey with goals coming from Mateja Kezman and Peguy Luyindula, and then drew 0-0 with them in the return leg at Parc des Princes. Jerome Rothen and Claude Makelele are important cogs in the PSG wheel, both having had previous European experience.
