The Russians put up a brave fight against Germany for the lone automatic spot to next year's World Cup finals but suffered a narrow defeat to the Germans in the penultimate game before ending the campaign with a 1-1 draw against Azerbaijan.

Coach Guus Hiddink will be confident that his side can overcome the challenge posed by Slovenia but will be wary of complacency as he looks to successfully help a team qualify for the World Cup finals for a fourth successive time. Hiddink led Netherlands, South Korea and Australia into the World Cup on the last three occasions while Russia were one of the stronger teams during the Euro 2008 tournament under the Dutch coach.

Andrey Arshavin, Diniar Bilyaletdinov, Igor Akinfeev and Alan Dzagoev will prove to be the key players for Russia while Tottenham Hotspur striker Roman Pavlyuchenko has been called up to the squad though there is some doubt whether he will be starting the match.

Meanwhile Slovenia coach Matjaz Kek will be hoping for another miracle this week as he looks to repeat his side's surprise qualification to Euro 2000 and help them qualify for their second World Cup finals. Slovenia start their play-offs against Russia as clear underdogs but Kek will be optmistic that if his side can avoid defeat in the first leg in Russia, they start a good chance of pulling off another upset by qualifying for the next year's World Cup.
