Romania held France to a 1-1 draw at the Stade de France on Saturday evening. Barcelona striker Thierry Henry put France ahead, but Les Bleus defender Julien Escude scored an own goal from Iulian Apostol’s cross to allow Romania a share of the spoils.

Romania’s stand out performer on the night was captain Cristian Chivu. The central defender helped thwart many a French attack, and cemented his reputation as one of the best defenders in the game currently. Midfielder Apostol and goalkeeper Danut Coman also had reasonably successful outings. Romania currently have eight points from seven games, and are second from bottom in Group 7.

Austria did their chances of qualification no harm as they beat minnows Faroe Islands in Graz. Stefan Maierhofer gave Austria a dream start with his first minute strike, and a brace from Red Bull Salzburg striker Marc Janko allowed Austria to ease to a comfortable 3-1 win.

Captain Paul Scharner returns from suspension, but Marc Janko will miss the trip to Bucharest after being booked on Saturday. Juergen Patocka joins experienced defenders Emanuel Pogatetz and Sebastien Prodl on the sidelines with an achilles injury. Christophe Drazan will also be unavailable because of an ankle problem.
