AS Roma kick off their Champions League campaign with a home clash against CFR Cluj with the aim to be involved in the final of the tournament that will be played at their Stadio Olimpico in May next year. Roma's only appearance in the Champions League final was more than 25 years ago when the competition was named the European Cup. The Italian side lost out to Liverpool on penalties after holding the then English champions to a 1-1 draw in normal time.

Roma have reached the quarter finals of the competition in the last two seasons, losing out to Manchester United on both occasions. Coach Luciano Spalletti will be looking to maintain his side's perfect start to the new campaign with Roma winning their opening match of the group stage in the last two seasons with their opponents also from eastern Europe.

 

 

It will be an historic occasion for CFR Cluj with the Romanian club making its first ever appearance in the Champions League. Cluj has qualified for Europe just twice in its history, playing in the 2005 Intertoto Cup and then following it up with a place in the UEFA Cup last season.

Cluj coach Maurizio Trombetta has already assured himself a place in the Romanian football record books after guiding Cluj to their first ever league title in May. It was the first time that a team outside Bucharest had won the league title in more than 17 years.

 

 

While his team are expected to finish at the bottom of the group table, Trombetta will be aiming for at least a third place finish that will extend their European campaign to the UEFA Cup.
