Newcastle United take on Spanish side Real Mallorca at ONO Estadi in their next Mallorca Summer Cup match on Sunday as manager Kevin Keegan continues his rebuilding efforts before the season starts on August 17.

Keegan is on the verge of completing a deal for FC Metz's Sebastien Bassong after the French defender completed the medical and agreed personal terms with the club. Bassong has been on trial with Newcastle and played in the 1-0 defeat against Doncaster Rovers on Saturday and is currently with the team who play their first match of the Mallorca Summer Cup against Hertha Berlin on Friday.

 

 

Newcastle are also in pursuit of Deportivo La Coruna defender Fabricio Coloccini and are willing to pay around 9 million pounds. However the Spanish club has upped the price for Coloccini though the Argentina international is eager to join the Magpies and is unhappy with his club for rejecting Newcastle's early moves.

Meanwhile Newcastle's Joey Barton is once again in the soup just a day after Keegan assured the troubled midfielder that he will be given a second chance at the club. Fifteen months after punching his then Manchester City team mate Ousmane Dabo in a brawl, the FA has charged Barton of violent conduct and given the player 2 weeks to come up with a response.

Mallorca coach Gregorio Manzano has been busy in the summer, brining in as many as eight new players as he attempts qualify for Europe this season. Mallorca finished seventh last season, just one point behind Racing Santander and Manzano will be hoping that his side will manage to qualify for Europe for the first time since 2004.
