Real Madrid will be hoping to put behind their recent disappointments in the domestic league with a convincing victory over Zenit St Petersburg when the two teams clash in their final Champions League group game on Wednesday. Madrid have already qualified to the knockout stages by collecting nine points from their five matches but will be hoping to take advantage of any slip up by Juventus against BATE Borisov by clinching the top spot in the group table.

The Spanish champions had secured a hard fought 2-1 win over Zenit in the first leg. An own goal by Tomas Hubocan had given Madrid an early lead but Zenit fought back to equalize through Danny Alves before Rudd van Nistelrooy scored the winner in the 31st minute.

 

 

However Madrid are facing a striker crisis with Nistelrooy out for the rest of the season, Gonzalo Higuain yet to regain full fitness and Raul struggling for form. Madrid have completed the signing of Klaas Jan Huntelaar and while the Ajax striker is eligible to play in the competition, he will only be available for the knockout round.

Zenit St Petersburg meanwhile will be satisfied with their performance in the competition. The UEFA Cup winners were hopeful of springing a surprise and qualify to the knockout stage above either Madrid or Juventus but a bad start to the group stage saw them collect just one point from their first three matches.

 

 

However the Russian champions came good when it mattered and secured a vital win away to Borisov in their next match that assured that the club will at least finish third in the group and book a place in the UEFA Cup for the next round.
