Real Madrid’s woe’s continued last Saturday evening when they were beaten in the “clasico” by in-form Barcelona and are now slipping dangerously down the table. After having sacked head coach Schuster at the beginning of the previous week, the game against Barca was Juande Ramos’ first La Liga game in charge of the defending champions (he won his first game which was a Champion’s League encounter last Wednesday evening) but although he saw his new team perform well with a gutsy display, they finally fell victim to two late Barcelona goals. Real Madrid’s decline is alarming by their own very high standards and Saturday’s defeat at Barcelona was third league one in a row and the fourth in five games. The ever-expanding injury list is not helping matters either and it was confirmed last week that Mali midfielder Mahamadou Diarra faces an agonising nine months on the sidelines with a serious knee injury picked up on international duty. The old saying that it never rains but it pours appears to be very apt for Real Madrid’s predicament at the moment!

Real’s opponents this coming Saturday, Valencia, enjoyed a good 2-1 home win over Espanyol last weekend and now sit proudly in second position in the league on thirty points, four ahead of Real but a huge eight behind leaders Barcelona.
