Real Madrid suffered their second defeat in three games, and their second in a row away from home last weekend, when they lost to a spirited Getafe side by 3-1. Real Madrid appear to be stuttering of late and have now won only twice in the last five games. Although their home form is impressive - they remain unbeaten with five wins and one draw - their away form is seriously undermining their defence of a title they won so handsomely last season. It now seems that if they don’t snap out of it as soon a possible, they could well find that leaders Barcelona will be out of site and uncatchable. They are already six points behind the Catalans and ideally wouldn’t want to be much further behind come Christmas time.

On the injury front, Real’s casualty list just seems to keep mounting with the latest to suffer, defender Gabriel Heinze. They now have no fewer than nine members of their squad missing for one reason or another and this is certainly not helping their cause at all.

Sevilla come into the match having been given a torrid time by Barcelona last weekend, ending up losing the match 3-0 at home. That result put a serious dent in Sevilla’s ambitions of securing Champions League football next season and a game against Real Madrid straight after the humbling by Barcelona is definitely not what the doctor ordered. The team have a few injuries and suspensions to get over so the trip to the capital couldn’t really have come at a worst time.
