Real Madrid took full advantage of Barcelona’s slip up last Saturday when they replied in the best possible way the following day with a thumping 4-0 away win at Sporting Gijon. This win, coupled with Barcelona’s draw, now means the gap at the top of the table is down to ten points and Real will be hoping against hope that Barcelona will hit a bad patch and therefore drop a few points, allowing them, provided they can keep winning of course, the opportunity to close the gap even further.

Real Madrid travelled to Sporting Gijon last Sunday already knowing that Barca had dropped two points the evening before. This probably galvanised them because they put in a great performance and totally blew away the home side, scoring four goals in the process. A brace by Raul (who broke the club scoring record) and one each by Huntelaar and Marcelo  was enough to put Gijon to the sword and guarantee Real still have a bit of life left in them yet when it comes to pursuing the La Liga crown.

As mentioned, Real Betis come in to the game after having given Barcelona an almighty scare last weekend. The match eventually finished two apiece but Betis actually took a two goal lead in the game and Barca didn’t equalise until the 84^th minute. Despite this good result for Betis, they are still fifteenth in the league table with 26 points. Their away form this season has been topsy-turvy with five wins, one draw and six defeats from their twelve games.
