The nine time European champions have not progressed to the quarter finals in their last four seasons while Liverpool have made it to the last eight in four out of last five seasons including a penalty shootout win against AC Milan in the final during the 2005 season.

Madrid have a decent home record against English opponents, winning four and losing just once in their last nine meetings at Santiago Bernabeu. The only defeat came against Arsenal who secured a 1-0 win during the 2005-06 first knockout round stage.

 

 

Liverpool will be looking to maintain their excellent recent form in the competition as they look to qualify for the quarter finals for a fifth time in six seasons. The Reds finished their group stage unbeaten with four wins in six matches and will be looking to secure an early advantage as they look to reclaim their trophy they had last won in 2005.

The Reds have a pretty good record in Spain, winning six of the 12 games played on Spanish soil and losing just twice. Liverpool secured a comfortable 2-1 win over Barcelona last season and their last defeat in Spain came back in 2002-03 campaign when they lost out to Valencia.

 

 

Both the teams last met during the 1980 European Champion Clubs' Cup final when Liverpool secured a narrow 1-0 win to lift their third European title.
