The Spanish giants have had an excellent start to their group stage campaign beating FC Zurich 5-2 in their first game while securing a convincing 3-0 win over Marseille in their last game. Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring 13 minutes into the second half before Kaka doubled the lead from the penalty spot three minutes later. Ronaldo then completed the rout by scoring his second goal in the 64th minute.

The win leaves Madrid three points clear at the top of their group table and with the remaining three teams struggling for form, coach Manuel Pellegrini will be hoping to wrap up their progress to the knockout stages and do away with distractions of their European campaign as they plot to wrest the La Liga title from Barcelona.

While Madrid are off to an excellent start to their new season, AC Milan have struggled badly with the club sitting 14th in their domestic league table while suffering a shock defeat to FC Zurich in their last European game.

Hannu Tihinen was on target for the Swiss champions as Milan failed to capitalize on Marseille's poor start to the group stage by moving six points clear of the third place. Coach Leonardo will be hoping to come away from their double header against Madrid with minimal damage and then look to progress to the next round by putting up improved performance against both Marseille and Zurich in their remaining two games.
