Barcelona recorded their tenth straight league win last Sunday when Sporting Gijon were the latest sacrificial lambs to the slaughter, with a 3-1 victory. Barcelona enjoyed an easy afternoon’s work last weekend when they comfortably beat Gijon by 3-1. They were 2-0 up at half time thanks to a brace from Eto’o. Alves added a third in the 66^th minute and all Gijon could do was pull one back in the 73^rd minute, by which time it was obviously too late to try and stage any sort of recovery. Samuel Eto’o has now scored nineteen league goals so far this season and sits proudly at the top of the goal scoring charts. Barcelona’s total dominance of league proceedings so far this season is aptly shown by the fact that Lionel Messi is the league’s third top goal scorer with sixteen and Thierry Henry fourth with twelve goals.

They travel to Real Betis on Sunday without captain and defender Puyol who suffered a recurrence of a muscle injury in his left leg. Apart from this the team are at more or less full strength and will be odds on favourites to claim an eleventh consecutive league victory.

For their part, Real Betis come in to this game on the back of a great win away to the disappointing of late Sevilla. This result pushed them up to fourteenth in the La Liga table with 25 points. Their home form is not terribly good though, and they have recorded two wins, three draws and five defeats in their ten games so far in Betis.
