Rapid suffered their third defeat in the group on Match Day 5 as they were beaten 2-0 by Hamburger SV. Two goals in six second half minutes from Marcell Jansen and Marcus Berg allowed HSV to beat Rapid in front of a 45,000 plus crowd at the HSH Nordbank Arena.

Rapid’s Yasin Pehlivan was booked in that game and is suspended for Celtic’s visit. Peter Pacult’s side have won both their Austrian Bundesliga games since that defeat to Hamburg. They first beat Kafpenberger 3-1 and followed it up with a 2-1 win over Ried. Captain Stefen Hoffmann, striker Nikica Jelavic and Albanian international Hamdi Salihi were on target against Kafpenberger, while Markus Katzer and Rene Gartler netted against Ried.

Celtic did what they needed to do against Hapoel Tel Aviv a fortnight ago but the Bhoys saw their European hopes extinguished by HSV’s win over Rapid. A quickly taken free kick saw Aiden McGeady burst into the box and cross for Greek striker Georgios Samaras to head home. Samaras nearly made it 2-0 thirteen minutes later with a cheeky back flick, but his effort hit the post.

Barry Robson sealed victory for Celtic when he curled a left footed free kick into the bottom corner of Vincent Enyeama’s goal. It was Celtic’s first win of the competition, but unfortunately it arrived too late to revive the Bhoys’ European hopes.
