After last weekend’s extra-time defeat to Celtic in the Scottish League Cup Final at Hampden Park, Rangers must pick themselves up, dust themselves down, and get back to the nitty-gritty of trying to catch Celtic at the top of the SPL. Since their last SPL match, which was the surprise home defeat to bottom club Inverness, Rangers have progressed to the semi-finals of the Scottish Cup, but also lost in the final of the Scottish League Cup. The League Cup Final defeat would not have been only demoralising considering the fact that they lost the game to bitter rivals Celtic, but also energy sapping as the game was decided in extra time.

The game against Celtic, like all of the old firm games this season for some reason, was not a classic by any stretch of the imagination and chances were few and far between. It was a case of the first team to make a mistake in extra time, and as it happened, this was Rangers. Celtic scored two goals to settle the game – with their first and then with their last attacks of the extra time period.

The league game against Hearts on Saturday will give the Blues a chance to get the Celtic result out of their system. They will need a good performance if they are to try and close the three point gap at the top of the table. Hearts come into the game on the back of a 1-0 Edinburgh derby defeat to Hibs but still remain five points clear in third position with 48 points.
