The Gers ceded ground to title rivals Celtic last week after being held to a 0-0 draw by Kilmarnock. In a match that was bitterly contested, Rangers boss Walter Smith was sent off from the touchline and is facing a four-match ban for possible misconduct with officials.

Pedro Mendes was handed a red card, while Manuel Pascali also received one; thus ensuring that both teams finished the game with just 10 men. However Rangers made amends during the midweek beating Queen of South 2-1 in a League Cup clash thanks to goals by Steven Naismith and substitute Nacho Novo.

Smith will hope that they carry this form into the SPL as well and at least be on equal footing for the first Old Firm derby on October 4.

Meanwhile Aberdeen had mixed luck over the last week winning in the SPL, but being dumped out of the League Cup by Dundee.

The Dons beat St Mirren 1-0 thanks to a stunning free-kick from Charlie Mulgrew, but lost to Dundee 3-2 on Wednesday night. Aberdeen boss Mark McGhee will have been disappointed with that defeat and will hope his side can made amends on Saturday.
