Rangers will be looking to improve on their poor form against Greek opposition when they welcome Panathinaikos in the first leg of their UEFA Cup knockout round on Wednesday.

The Scottish club has played six matches against Greek opponents, winning just one and losing three. While the solitary win was at the Ibrox stadium, a worrying statistic for coach Walter Smith will be that his side have suffered two defeats at home.

Smith was at the helm when Rangers took on AEK Athens in qualifying rounds of the 1994-95 UEFA Champions League when they lost by an aggregate of 3-0. With Rangers' away form being poor, Smith will be hoping that his side will get a win at home if they are to make it to the next round.

Panathinaikos on the other hand will be confident of going through to the next round with the Greek club winning two of their three matches played against Scottish opposition. Panathinaikos qualified to the knockout stage by finishing second in Group B, winning three of their four matches.

Both the teams have already met once in the European club competition with the Greek club holding Rangers to a 1-1 draw in Athens and followed it up with a 3-1 victory at the Ibrox back in the 2003-04 UEFA Champions League group stage.

Goalkeeper Allan McGregor and Chris Burke featured in the matches for Rangers while Nasief Morris, Goumas and Dimitris Papadopoulos taking part in the tie for Panathinaikos. The winners of the tie will face either Werder Bremen or SC Braga in the next round.
