Atletico are currently placed fifth in the league table with 49 points from 31 matches, three points behind Valencia who also have a superior head-to-head record between the two teams. A win against Racing is imperative for Atletico if they are to have any hopes of overhauling the lead enjoyed by Valencia and qualify to the Champions League next season.

New manager Abel Resino has enjoyed a fairly successful start to his reign at the club, with Atletico winning three of their last five matches including a comfortable 3-0 win over Numancia last weekend. After a quiet first half, Atletico took the lead through Ever Banega midway through the second half before goals from Diego Forlan and Simao ensured that there were no slip ups late in the game.

Racing on the other hand go into the match on the back of two straight defeats and still in danger of getting dragged into a relegation battle. Racinguistas are currently sitting 13th in the league table and while a six point lead over 18th placed Recreativo Huelva should ensure safety for the club, manager Juan Ramon Lopez Muniz will be taking no chances and is likely to field an attacking line up.

Atletico had secured a thumping 4-1 win when both the teams met early this season thanks to a second half brace by Forlan.
