Portugal coach Luiz Felipe Scolari is a highly regarded tactician and he has been instrumental in the rise of the country in football rankings. With a midfield that consists of vaunted names like Deco, Joao Moutinho, Miguel Veloso and Raul Meireles, Scolari has a surfeit of talent at his disposal.

The only surprise omission from the Portuguese squad was Maniche, who plays for Inter Milan. Portugal are expected to breeze through to the next stage and the Czech Republic are seen as their only threat.

Meanwhile Turkey have also made excellent progress under the watchful eye of coach Fatih Terim. Nihat Kahveci has been in excellent form for Villarreal in the Spanish La Liga and he will look to replicate that form on the international stage as well.

Surprise omissions from the 23-man squad include Yildiray Basturk, Ibrahim Kas and Halil Altintop. Terim has also omitted Hakan Sukur from his plans. Gokhan Gonul was forced to pull out of the squad after breaking a metatarsal bone in his right foot.
