Euro 2008 has entered the quarterfinal stage and it does not get more exciting than Portugal facing Germany in the first of these games on Thursday. Portugal had already made sure of their quarterfinal ticket before they faced Switzerland in their last Group A game. Coach Luiz Felipe Scolari would have been disappointed to see his side lose 2-0 to Switzerland thanks to Hakan Yakin's brace.

However Scolari opted to go with a second-string Portugal team so that his stars can rest up ahead of their quarterfinals. That said the Portuguese have all players fit for this clash and none of them has been suspended although Paulo Ferreira and Jose Bosingwa may miss the semi-final should they collected another yellow card in this game.

With the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Ricardo Quaresma and Pepe in great form, it does look like Portugal can make it to the finals of the tournament once again.

Germany limped into the quarterfinals after they beat co-hosts Austria 1-0 thanks to a goal from skipper Michael Ballack. After their shock 2-1 loss to eventual Group B leaders Croatia, Germany are left with a mountain to climb as they face a Portugal side that appears to have hit a purple patch.

Their task has been made harder with news that Lukas Podolski is doubtful for this game with a calf injury. Germany Coach Joachim Loew will hope that Podolski recovers in time as his fellow strikers Mario Gomez and Miroslav Klose are in poor form.
