Pompey had lost both their matches to Middlesbrough last season with Gareth Southgate's side managing to sneak in a 1-0 away victory before beating Portsmouth 2-0 at home. Harry Redknapp's side have not scored a goal against Middlesbrough in their last three league meetings though the manager will be hoping for a different result this time around.

 

 

After suffering defeats to Chelsea and Manchester United in their first two matches, Portsmouth registered a convincing 3-0 win away to Everton in their last match. With the club hoping for a top six finish this season, Harry Redknapp will be aware that his side will have to show consistent form against teams below them in order to achieve their pre season ambitions.

Meanwhile confidence will be high at Middlesbrough with the club off to a great start, collecting six points from their first three matches. Boro beat Tottenham Hotspur in their opening match of the season and though they suffered a narrow defeat to Liverpool, the club bounced back to register a 2-1 win over Stoke City in their last match.

 

 

Boro have impressed in their opening three matches and while the club is expected to once again end the season in mid-table, fans will be optimistic that their side will try hard to finish in the top half of the table for the first time in four years.
